Nostalgia del Futuro

Nostalgia
del Futuro

The first novel by
Armando Di Nardo

The Main Work

The Novel

In a world that has crossed the trauma of the Pandemic, between disillusionment and the desire for rebirth, the protagonists of this choral story move.

Pierre, a disillusioned but still restless scientist; Isabel, his great love abruptly interrupted in adolescence; Rachelè, a brilliant young mind who searches physics for the laws of beauty and justice; Marcel, Alexandre, Giovanni and others, bound by a concrete utopia, around whom stories, memories and an unexpected project intertwine: building a new social network capable of connecting the desire to change with the courage to actually try.

Nostalgia del Futuro is not just a novel, but a narrative laboratory of formation that weaves science, politics, philosophy, love and poetry. An invisible map drawn between future and past, between what we have lost and what we can still inhabit and preserve.

Fragments from the Manuscript

This novel is born there, in that thin crevice between what was and what could have been – and perhaps can still be.

— Author's note

Nostalgia for the future is the condition of those who have sensed the possibility of another story, though not yet visible.

— Introduction of the work

There is a time that comes before time: that of possibilities.

— Introduction of the work

In that interval between what was and what cannot be, the memory of love still lives, intact.

NDF-Offshoots

Offshoots from Nostalgia del Futuro

For several years I have been working on Nostalgia del Futuro (NDF), a novel built through a series of narrative and conceptual kernels. Through characters, places, and dialogues, the book traverses different themes — from science to politics, from memory to love, from technology to the search for meaning — without sacrificing an internal coherence of tone, vision, and questioning of the future.

In NDF, these kernels are born from the meeting of personal experience, readings, places, relationships, and questions left open. They do not interrupt the story with a theoretical reflection, but transform an intuition, a memory, or an anxiety into narrative material. The NDF-Offshoots will continue this logic with greater temporal and thematic freedom: they may arise from new readings, subsequent experiences, or reflections matured beyond the drafting of the novel, but they will remain recognizable as offshoots of Nostalgia del Futuro because they will preserve its pace, some characteristics of the characters, the tension between thought and story, and that forward-looking nostalgia from which the entire project takes its name.

After a long phase of writing and revision, the manuscript is currently under editorial review. If the process continues as expected, the novel could see the light of day by the end of the year.

During this work I realized that some questions contained in NDF continued to generate new stories. Some were only hinted at in the novel, others led towards futures too distant or towards scenarios that would have required an autonomous path. Still others arose from articles published in the meantime on the blog and ended up intertwining with the themes of the book.

Thus were born the NDF-Offshoots.

The English term offshoot indicates a branch that grows from a common trunk. These stories are not previews of the novel, nor simple appendices to the main plot. They are autonomous explorations that share the same horizon of questions with Nostalgia del Futuro and, when necessary, resume the path of its characters, observing them in other times, under other conditions, or along developments only hinted at in the book. Sometimes they deepen an already present kernel; other times they connect several of them; still other times they introduce new perspectives, capable of expanding the universe of NDF without betraying its identity.

In a sense, they also represent a way to accompany the novel towards publication. While the manuscript follows its own editorial path, the Offshoots allow us to share with readers some of the ideas that constitute its breeding ground, transforming them into short stories, thought experiments, and possible futures.

Keynes's Prophecy

The connection with NDF

This offshoot connects directly to Chapter 4 of Nostalgia del Futuro, exploring the psychological impact of deep automation and the potential disappearance of traditional work in the society of liberated time.

In 1930 John Maynard Keynes published a short essay destined to become one of the most famous economic prophecies of the twentieth century: Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren...

The Attention Dilemma

The connection with NDF

This branch connects directly to the figure of the protagonist and his struggle against the fragmentation of time caused by hyperconnection. It explores attention not as a commodity, but as a common good of human experience.

A few years ago I read an article dedicated to a former Google employee who had left the company because he no longer shared the way digital platforms tried to take possession of users' time...
